Managing Director - Specialty
Tom Hillier joined Markel in December 2023 as Managing Director – Specialty. Tom has over 20 years of experience in the London Specialty Insurance market. Post graduation, Tom spent time as an Engineering Consultant, before joining AIG and then moving to ACE European Group in 2005, initially setting up Environmental Liability as a new class of business and latterly taking on a much broader role managing the London corporate casualty portfolio.
Tom moved to Brit in 2013 as Class Underwriter for International Casualty and by 2014 had been elevated to Divisional Director for Specialist Liability. In 2019 Tom was promoted to Managing Director for Specialty at Brit, with expansion of responsibility to include Marine, Energy, Renewables, Space, Nuclear & UK, International and US Casualty. Currently, Tom leads the Specialty division for Markel Wholesale, with oversight of Marine & Energy Liability, Transport & Logistics, International Casualty, Livestock & Bloodstock, Trade Credit, Political Risk and Surety.
Tom has a BSc (Hons) from the University of Nottingham in Environmental Engineering Technology. At the weekend if Tom is not at the football watching his team Tottenham Hotspur, he is either walking his dog on the beaches of southeast England or sporting lycra and cycling the Surrey hills.
